Ways to protect your home during holiday travel

Keep your home safe over the holidays

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - The Montgomery Police Department wants to protect you from thieves this holiday season.

“We want to be thinking safety this time of year, because you have to remember criminals they are out and they are looking for an opportunity and we don’t want to be an easy target," Sergeant David Hicks, with MPD, said.

Hicks said some ways not to become an “easy target” are to:

  • Lock your doors and windows
  • Set your home alarm
  • Notify a neighbor
  • Don’t post about your travels online until after you return home

It’s also a good idea to leave a light on.

“If they see a house that is not lit up and it’s dark then they will think that that’s an easy target, and that you’re probably not home," Hicks said.

Hicks said thieves also target homes with packages left on the front porch.

“You can track your item and have a friend pick your item up for you, that’s always a good idea. Another thing that you can do is you can actually request this through the postal service and they will let you know when your item arrives so that you can be there," Hicks said.

MPD offers free vacation home checks and will check on your home while you’re on vacation. Call 3-1-1 for more information.

The Millbrook Police Department, Selma Police Department and Wetumpka Police Department also offer free vacation home checks.
