MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - The two teams playing in the 2018 Raycom Media Camellia Bowl are settling into Montgomery. The Georgia Southern Eagles and Eastern Michigan Eagles hit the gridiron for their first practice Wednesday before enjoying special meals and activities.
The Eastern Michigan Eagles were welcomed in a big way to Riverwalk stadium. Greeted by members of the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce, they enjoyed barbecue.
“I am in love with anything barbecue. This has to be the best ribs I have ever had. The pulled pork was amazing. The chicken was even better,” said Eastern Michigan junior long snapper Drake Sutton.
“The food, it is one of a kind. It is really a difference between down south food and up north," said Eastern Michigan sophomore defensive back Freddie McGee.
Wednesday night the Georgia Southern Eagles took the competition from the gridiron to the bowling alley at Bama Lanes.
“I just like to compete. I like going against my other teammates and having some fun,” said Georgia Southern junior place kicker Tyler Bass.
This trip to Montgomery is a first for many players, but already the Capital City is leaving an impression.
“It has been great. Everyone walking by is welcoming," said Georgia Southern football player Line Latu.
The opportunity to play in a bowl game is also special to both teams.
“It is just a crazy feeling, cause as a kid this is something you always hope you will be able to do,” said Georgia Southern sophomore defensive end Raymand Johnson.
“Words can’t even explain about Saturday.This is my last time putting on this uniform. I am so excited and ready to put on for the city,” said Georgia Southern senior running back Wesley Fields.
While Wednesday was about enjoying food and fun Saturdays game is top of mind.
“That has been our goal all season to go out and win it,” said Sutton
“It is going to be a show. Like coach says come out cause we are going to show out," said Johnson.
