MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - A Jefferson Davis High School senior is preparing for a once in a lifetime opportunity. In just about two months, Joseph Bradley will be competing in the Special Olympics World Games.
While the Special Olympics of Alabama will handle the costs of getting Joseph to Abu Dhabi for the games, fundraising efforts are underway to make sure his mother and two brothers can be with him to watch him compete.
Friday, Moe’s on Zelda Road and Eastchase held a Spirit Night to help Joseph and his family. A percentage of the proceeds on this night going to support Joseph Bradley.
“I am going to win the gold. It is going to be amazing,” said Joseph Bradley.
In March, Bradley will join 10,000 delegates from 170 nations for the Special Olympics world games. He will be competing on the equestrian team. Riding horses has been a passion of his since 2011 while participating in Therapeutic Recreation Centers program.
“We all want our children to find their niche in life. This is one niche Joseph has found. He loves riding horses and when he rides the horses he commands the horses and his face lights up,” said Mary Bradley.
Mary Bradley said while Joseph’s trip there is taken care of, they are still working to raise $33,000 in order for her and his two brothers to be there to cheer him on. The first deadline they must meet is on Jan. 11. That is when they must have $13,000. The costs include three passports, three plane tickets, and the cost of a hotel stay for 13 nights and food during the trip.
“We want to be there for him. We are kinda his push force," said Mary Bradley. “I am grateful to everyone for supporting us. It means a lot to us to be able to support him."
One of Joseph’s favorite sayings is, “You Can Do It!” Through his ups and downs, he uses his smile to change the world and does not let the world change his smile. You can read his bio on the Special Olympics USA website.
