Alabama correctional officer arrested for marijuana possession

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - A correctional officer with Alabama’s Department of Corrections (ADOC) was arrested for marijuana possession on January 9, 2019 at Limestone Correctional Facility in Harvest. Kedric Russell, 30, was taken to the Limestone County jail after agents found a package of marijuana in his car during a search.

Russell, of Athens, had only been on the job for 9 months. An ADOC spokesperson said he has resigned from his job.

This comes as ADOC is under federal investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice. The department is also in the midst of the remedy phase of a class-action lawsuit over mental healthcare for inmates.

WBRC reported last week that two backpacks filled with illegal drugs and contraband cell phones were found near Bibb County Correctional Facility in Brent.
