ELMORE COUNTY, AL (WSFA) - A man is dead after an officer-involved shooting in Elmore County Thursday evening.
According to Sheriff Bill Franklin, the man was shot when drug task force agents with the county tried to serve a search warrant at a home about five miles north of the Central Community, off Highway 9 in Eclectic.
Franklin said the agents conducted a control buy at the home earlier in the day, and while there they learned more narcotics and weapons could be inside. The agents returned with a search warrant at 6:01 p.m.
Authorities say an agent communicated outside the home through a window to the subject, telling him who they were and they were there to execute the search warrant. We’re told when they asked him to “be still” he ran into a bedroom and brandished a handgun at the pursuing agents.
Franklin said the agents fired three rounds – one by the first agent and two by the other – and the man was hit twice, once in the left hand and once in the neck. He died a short time after.
The Alabama State Bureau of Investigation has taken over the investigation, as is protocol. We have reached out to SBI for information and comment.
Franklin said this information is from a preliminary report based on what he observed at the scene. He also said authorities have been to the home of the shooting before and had served a search warrant there years before.
The identity of the victim has not been released.
