FRUITA, CO (WSFA) - FBI agents nab serial bank robber known as the “Travel Bandit” who allegedly hit banks across the country – even stopping in Prattville, Alabama.
Agents arrested Jason Lee Robinson, 49, in Fruita, Colorado, Thursday morning. He’s been officially charged for his alleged involvement in the robbery of a Capital Bank branch in Aventura, Florida, on Dec. 28, 2018. Robinson was wanted for at least seven bank robberies across six states, including Alabama.
Court documents show Robinson is charged with robbery for intimidating a teller at Capital Bank in Aventura, Florida, demanding cash and stating he had a weapon.
The document cites Robinson robbed seven banks in less than a month starting at Capital Bank in Florida on Dec. 28, 2018, then Suntrust Bank in Ashville, North Carolina, on Jan. 2, 2019, and two days Mountain Commerce Bank in Johnson City, Tennessee.
The following week, Robinson allegedly robbed U.S. Bank in Mt. Juliet, Tennessee, before driving to Prattville, Alabama, where he hit TrustMark Bank the morning of Jan. 10. From there agents believe Robinson drove to Mt. Vernon, Illinois, and then to Price Branch, Utah, robbing two additional banks before his arrest.
Coincidentally, Robinson was first identified as a potential match as the serial robbery suspect by law enforcement who reviewed recent federal inmates who were released from prison.
Robinson was convicted in the Eastern District of Kentucky in 2009 on various federal charges, according to the affidavit filed with his recent charge. Tattoos seen on the surveillance video of the bank robberies match Robinson’s description filed with the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
Agents ultimately learned Robinson was on supervised release only a month before the robberies were reported.
After they disseminated his picture to media outlets across the country, Robinson’s ex-wife called the FBI tip line confirming the Robinson was the man in the surveillance footage.
The Prattville Police Department assisted the FBI in this investigation and produced surveillance footage of Robinson’s SUV, the same vehicle he was seen driving in Utah prior to his arrest.
The FBI reported that no one had been injured during any of the robberies. Investigations by other police departments across the country, including the Prattville Police Department, are still ongoing.
