BIRMINGHAM, Al., -- Congressman Artur Davis (D-Birmingham) issued the following statement in regards to Agriculture Commissioner Ron Sparks' decision to enter the 2010 Governor's race:
"I have known and respected Ron Sparks for seven years, and I expect him to be a formidable candidate. I would say the same about Senator Bedford. But as so many voters have told me, Alabama politics is broken, and we need new ideas to improve our schools, revitalize our rural communities, and strengthen our state's economy. We also need to repair the broken public trust so that government can serve the people and not just a few powerful interests in Montgomery.
The question is, can candidates who are part of the entrenched status quo in Montgomery be counted on to fix Montgomery? Should Montgomery interest groups and power brokers be trusted to determine who ought to lead Alabama, or to find the new sense of public purpose we need in our state today? Whoever ends up in the race for governor, that race is on, the choices will be clear, and I intend to win it."
