No chalk, paper funds in $6.2 Billion edu. budget

Posted: Updated:

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - The Alabama House has passed a $6.2 billion budget to fund education for the fiscal year that begins Oct. 1. The House approved the budget on a 103-0 vote Tuesday.

The budget maintains level funding for a popular program to improve student performance in reading, but it would reduce funding for programs to improve performance in math and science and for a distance learning program.

It also would eliminate funding for classroom supplies, such as paper and chalk.

The budget also reduces funding for textbooks to just $17 per student.

Legislators say that's enough to pay for student workbooks, but not enough to buy new textbooks.

The budget has already passed the Senate, but it returns to the Senate to approve changes made in a House committee.
