Montgomery, Ala. (WSFA) -- Montgomery Public Schools received high marks in a recent study by Alabama State University.
Nearly 42% rated Montgomery Public Schools good to excellent. That's up 11% from 2005. But, almost all agreed the school system needs improvement.
"Ninety percent of the people we surveyed said there was still room for improvement, so we're not there, but we are moving in the right direction. The majority of the people we talked to say we are, and we've come along ways since 2005 when we were headed in the wrong direction," said ASU Research Manager Myles Mayberry.
Over half of the 588 residents polled, said they would support a property tax increase to help public schools. Support for a property tax increase reached a low of 37.2% in the 2006 survey.
When asked about their opinion of the past superintendent, John Dilworth, nearly 20% of those surveyed said he did an excellent job and another nearly 27% said he did a good job. This represents a nearly 19% increase in the approval rating of the superintendent's job performance since 2005.
The survey was conducted from March 9th - April 16th, 2009.
