Ashford Elementary School raises money for Honor Flight

ASHFORD, AL (WSFA) - This past weekend the Wiregrass Honor Flight took its maiden trip to Washington D.C. and for 90 WWII veterans on board it was a trip of a lifetime.

The Wiregrass Chapter of Honor Flight has already set the date for their second flight and is working hard to raise the needed funds and one school is doing its part to help with the fundraising.

Fresh off the plane from their first trip to Washington the Wiregrass Chapter of the Honor Flight is hard at work raising money for their second trip in September.

Veterans don't pay a dime to go so organizers rely on donations to make the trips happen.

To help, Ashford Elementary students choose Honor Flight as their spirit of service project.

They planned to donate pennies to send one veteran on the next flight.

"Well when we found out it was for our veterans, we wanted to send them to Washington so they could see their memorial,' says Trevor Thigpen, a 6th grader at Ashford Elementary.

However, students exceeded their goal of $350 they raised over $4,000, enough money to send 11 veterans.

"We were so shocked we recounted it because we couldn't believe it and we never dreamed that we could raise this kind of money and with the economy the way it is, it makes it that much more special," says Beth Pittman, Assistant principal of Ashford Elementary.

The next honor flight is September 19.  If you'd like more information about that flight you can check out their website at www.wiregrasshonorflight.org.
