
Rep. Robert BentleyBIRMINGHAM, AL (WSFA) - A republican has thrown his hat into the ring for the upcoming Alabama Governor's race.
State Representative Robert Bentley (Tuscaloosa) announced his intentions to seek the GOP nomination Wednesday before kicking off a two-day state-wide bus tour.
The tour will end Thursday afternoon in Montgomery.
Bentley, a Tuscaloosa dermatologist, was elected to the Alabama House of Representatives in 2002. He is currently on the Agriculture, Education Appropriations and Internal Affairs Committees in the House.
"Serving in the state House has been a blessing and honor, but now the time has come to explore a new horizon and face new challenges to fulfill the deep commitment I feel to my local community, to our state, and to the people of Alabama," Rep. Bentley said.
Several prominent democrats including Rep. Artur Davis and State Agriculture Commissioner Ron Sparks have already announced plans to seek the governor's office in 2010.
