Nine neglected horses rescued in Covington Co.

Covington Co., AL (WSFA) - After several calls and complaints from concerned citizens, officers from the Covington County Sheriff's department along with investigators from Alabama's Department of  Agriculture and Industries responded to a call of animal neglect and cruelty at 3884 Grange Forge Road located west of the town of Red Level.

Authorities found nine horses that were in a 1/4 acre fenced in area with no grass, food, hay or water. It is believed that the horses were kept in this condition for the past three years.

Christopher Francis Marvin, 48, was arrested and charged with 1 count of Cruelty to Animals/Animal abuse and was booked into the Covington Co. Jail under a $3000 bond.

"Animals are like children, they cannot take care of themselves," stated Covinton County Sheriff Dennis Meeks. "We arrest and prosecute for child abuse and neglect, therefore we will arrest and prosecute for animal abuse and neglect" added Sheriff Meeks.

State Agriculture Commissioner Ron Sparks tells WSFA 12 News, Marvin has turned over the horses so someone else can properly care for them.
