SELMA, Ala. (AP) - Former Selma Mayor James Perkins has launched his bid for the 7th congressional district seat.
The 56-year-old Perkins added has name Friday to the growing list of candidates seeking the Democratic Party nomination. Perkins, who made history in 2000 when he was elected the first black mayor of Selma, hopes to become the first non-Birmingham resident to win the 7th district seat.
The district, which was created in the early 1990s, stretches from downtown Birmingham southwest to Tuscaloosa then swings south to include much of the state's Black Belt.
Only two people have held the seat - former Rep. Earl Hilliard and current Rep. Artur Davis, both Democrats from Birmingham. Davis is giving up the seat to run for governor.
