Two bomb scares in Dothan in less than week

DOTHAN, AL (WSFA) - There was another bomb scare in Dothan Monday.

For the third time in less than a week the Dothan bomb squad is investigating a potential explosive device.

Traffic was at a standstill for more than an hour as a robot removed what appeared to be a bomb from a Dothan drainage ditch.

A city cleaning crew made the discovery as they were working on South Oates Street.  They spotted the device outside a law firm.

In the end, there was no danger.  Investigators say the device turned out to be a left over firecracker from the Fourth of July.

"However, we don't go up and take a look at it say it's plastic, we treat it as such until it's rendered safe and that is what we are doing now regardless if it's a bomb or not," said Lt. Keith Gray of the Dothan Police Department.

The bomb squad detonated the device in a remote area of the city and will use the incident to enhance future training.

Before it was over, police shut down two blocks of downtown Dothan and evacuated a number of buildings including the Houston County Courthouse.

Last Thursday the Dothan bomb squad was called to a suspicious package outside of the Dale County Courthouse and a pipe bomb found in a car near Dothan High Shcool.
