DOTHAN, AL (WSFA) - New businesses moving to Houston County can access federal dollars.
The Houston County Commission approved a resolution designating them a recovery zone.
New and existing businesses in Houston County now have access to millions of dollars of federal funding.
The Houston County Commission agreed to designate the county a recovery zone under a provision in the economic stimulus package.
This means new businesses or existing businesses can access $14 million in bonds for either relocation or expansion.
"We thought it was a good opportunity, first and foremost we may be one of the first counties to designate our area as a recovery zone just so we're eligible to help local government but those businesses looking at ways to finance projects, now they'll have another option to move forward with and help create jobs," says Matt Parker, President of the Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce.
The bond money can be used for new construction, renovation or to purchase property in the county.
Bond money can also be used for public infrastructure work.
