Alabama man receives nation's highest honor

Montgomery, Ala. (WSFA) - An Alabama man and civil rights activist receives America's highest honor for a civilian.

Dr. Joseph Lowery will be honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

The Huntsville native began his work in the civil rights movement in the 1950's in south Alabama.   He also helped to lead the Montgomery bus boycott.

He's one of 16 people President Obama is honoring with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
