Dothan City Schools AYP scores

DOTHAN, AL (WSFA) - The announcement of AYP scores was a cause for celebration in Dothan.

The city school system showed major improvement in their test scores.

For the first time ever every school in the Dothan city school system passed the AYP test this year.

The biggest gains were at the high school level both Dothan High School and Northview High School recorded vastly improved test scores last year.

"There is no better way to start off the school year other than the news we just received, so we're looking forward to a new start and this is just the starting point and we're going to continue to increase and get out of school improvement all together," says Matt Humphreys, principal at Dothan High School.

"We have great students and great teachers and this is just a vindication and seeing all green cells, it was just a thrill and we're real excited," added Ron Snell, principal at Northview.

School officials say the news should provide a big boost to morale as students prepare to return to class next week.

"We're just really at step one and so we've been successful and it's time to celebrate and after our 15 minutes of celebration and now it's time to get back to work," explained Dr. Sam Nichols, superintendant of the Dothan City Schools.

Now it's on to next year where the goal is to achieve AYP for a second year in a row.

Schools that achieve their goals two years running are removed from the state's "needs improvement" list.
