DOTHAN, AL (WSFA) - The city of Dothan is beginning work on a multimillion dollar road project.

After years of planning the city is starting work on the $3.5 million project at the intersection of Fortner Street and Honeysuckle Road.

It's been a long time coming.  Construction is beginning on the widening and realignment of the Fortner Street and Honeysuckle Road intersection.

Fortner is being widened to four lanes and Honeysuckle to five lanes.  As well new turn lanes and a new bridge on Fortner Street.

The city is paying for the project using reserve funds, but because city revenues are down the city commission recently approved a resolution that allows them to still pay for the project and keep their reserves the same.

"It's always better to pay for it over time if we can, if we have that option and all we are doing is allowing our finance department to have that option open," explains Pat Thomas.  "That money which was originally going to be in a bond issue anyway could be put into a bond issue if the situation arises and we can take the three point five million cash back and put it into our reserve funds where they belong,"

Work on the project is set to take about 12 to 18 months.  On average around 20,000 people travel through the intersection daily.
