MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - Governor Bob Riley discussed the international economy and trade relations with Germany's ambassador to the United States and counsel general during a meeting on Thursday.

The Governor hosted Ambassador Klaus Scharioth and Counsel General Lutz Goergens in his office at the state capitol for a meeting focused on strengthening the international partnership between Alabama and Germany.

"In the global economy, Alabama has had no better partner for growth than Germany," Governor Riley said.  "Alabama has emerged as a global trading partner during the past few years and Germany is the number one destination for our exports.  More than 50 German-based companies have operations in the state and these companies employ about 16,000 Alabamians.  Our relationship with Germany is strong and our meeting reinforced that bond between Alabama and Germany," said Governor Riley.  "It's important to build and maintain these types of relationships as we seek to strengthen ties and develop new economic opportunities."

After the meeting, Governor Riley said he will soon be travelling to Germany to meet with a company that is considering Alabama for an economic development project.

German-based companies located in Alabama include the Mercedes plant in Vance, the ThyssenKrupp steel processing facility being built in Calvert, MAHA USA in Pinckard and Eissmann Automotive in Pell City.

The value of Alabama exports to Germany topped $3.1 billion in 2008.  The value of all exports from Alabama was $15.8 billion in 2008.
