Clay-Chalkville Middle School goes pink

CLAY, AL (WBRC) - Students and faculty from Clay-Chalkville Middle School showed their support Friday, both financially and physically, for breast cancer research.

More than 750 students and faculty gathered Friday morning on the school's football field to form a human pink ribbon.  The students and teachers were encouraged to wear pink shirts to show their support for breast cancer research ahead of Saturday's Susan G. Komen "Race for the Cure" in Birmingham.  The picture will be used for the cover of this year's yearbook.

The school also sold pink "Cougars for the Cure" t-shirts and held a penny drive to raise money for the event.  School principal Maurice Williams said almost $3,000 had been raised.

Heather Cagle, one of the 7th grader teachers at Clay-Chalkville Middle School, came up with the idea of the pink human ribbon and raising money for breast cancer research to support three other teachers who are breast cancer survivors.

"We have an awesome faculty and students here," Cagle said.  "I just wanted to do something to show support them."

Cagle said more than 30 people have signed up from the school to walk in Saturday's "Race for the Cure."
