Macon Co. to dedicate first flag, celebration planned

Posted: Updated:

TUSKEGEE, AL - Macon County is set to unveil a new flag that will be dedicated at 9:00am Friday.

The dedication is set to happen on the steps of the Macon County Courthouse in Tuskegee as the kickoff to the first "All Macon County Day" celebration.

Following the historic occasion, what is billed as the largest parade in Macon County history will happen on Saturday, October 17, 2009.

All four municipalities in Macon County and a majority of the 18 neighborhoods are participating.  Fire departments, police departments, schools, ATV clubs, motorcycle riders, vintage cars, social organizations, elected officials and others will march and roll along the parade route which starts at the Tuskegee Surgical and Medical Center (formerly the Thomas Reed Center) located at 301 Wright Street.

Staging begins at 8:00am on Saturday, October 17 and the parade will leave the starting point at 9:00am proceeding from Wright Street to North Main Street, turning at Northside Street to Westside Street to Eastside Street back to Northside Street, to Maple Street to Spring Street, back to North Main Street and returning to the Tuskegee Surgical and Medical Center.

The parade is among the activities planned for the inaugural "All Macon County Day" celebration, a concept originated by Macon County Commission Chairman Louis Maxwell and embraced by the entire Macon County Commission. This project is a first step in a long-term effort intended to get everyone in Macon County focused on the common good.

In addition to the parade, a Bar B Que cook-off will determine the best griller in Macon County. Also, on the schedule are tours of the newly renovated Macon County Courthouse, Macon County Jail and the Tuskegee Human and Civil Rights Multicultural Center. The day will culminate with live music on the Tuskegee Square.

Though the goal is to unify Macon County jurisdictions, this community is a friendly place that specializes in southern hospitality. Anyone from anywhere is welcome to attend this free experience.
