DOTHAN, AL (WSFA) - Dialing 211 is a free and easy way to connect with more than 16,000 non-profit state, faith based, and community organizations.

Now the helpline is connecting Alabamians with up to the minute information about the h1n1 virus.

The Alabama Department of Public Health is partnering with 211 call centers across the state, using the information hotline to get timely flu information out to the public.

"Being able to utilize 211 as another resource to get information out is very helpful to the health department," says David Duke, director for the Wiregrass 211 center.

Dialing 211 will also provide people with 10 things to do to fight h1n1 and the flu; as well provide ways to help stop the spread of the flu.

"We have all that type information that we can provide and let you know," adds Duke.

211 are designed to connect people with information about health and human services in their communities.

The Wiregrass United Way 211 covers 7 counties in Southeast Alabama.  24 hours a day seven days a week, callers speak with real people who can assist them with the resources they need.

"It just gives a central place for someone to call without going through a maze of different numbers and organizations to get to where you need to," explains Duke.

211 reach over 243 million people across the county and is completely free.
