DOTHAN, AL (WSFA) - Preliminary work is getting underway on the expansion project of the Little Choctawhatchee Wastewater Treatment Plant in Dothan.
Tuesday, the city approved the second portion of the project which building a new sewer line connect a new sewer line from the old plant to the new one.
Dothan city commissioners unanimously approved spending over seven million dollars to continue the ongoing work.
"This is the first step in solving some of the environmental issues we have associated with the Beaver Creek Plant,' says Mike West, Dothan City Manager.
This portion of the project is the construction of an interceptor line that will carry sewage from Beaver Creek to the Little Choctawhatchee Plant.
"It will all be down Beaver Creek, down the Little Choctawhatchee River," adds West.
The city has to close Beaver Creek Plant due to federal lawsuits over permit violations.
"Trying to get back ahead of the game anticipating more regulations," says Roscell Stringer, Wastewater Treatment Supervisor.
The city has already approved a $29 million bond issue to complete the expansion work.
Work on the new sewage line is expected to take about 15 months.
City officials expect work on the new sewer line to start around the beginning of December.
