BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Gov. Bob Riley has unveiled a package of bills he plans to ask the Alabama Legislature to pass to make state government more ethical.
Riley revealed the bills during a speech Tuesday a civil club in Birmingham. Riley started his speech by asking club members how many trust their elected officials. No hands were raised, which Riley said proves the legislation is needed.
One of those measures would require legislators and other public officials to fully disclose any gifts from lobbyists. That would include meals, travel or tickets to sporting events.
The legislation proposed by the governor would also require lobbyists to disclose on the Internet all spending on public officials and their family members.
The Legislature will consider the proposals when it begins its regular session in January.
