Shots fired at Samford after bookstore shoplifting

Posted: Updated:

HOMEWOOD, Ala. (AP) - A Samford University police officer has been injured while pursuing shoplifting suspects at the Homewood school.

Officials said the incident began around 3 p.m. Monday when officers responded to a call of shoplifting at the university's bookstore. Store employees tried to stop the shoplifter, who ran from the store and attempted to flee in a waiting vehicle driven by an accomplice. The injured officer was struck by the getaway car and was carried on the car's hood for several yards before being thrown to the ground. The officer managed to shoot out one of the car's tires as he fell.

Officials said the officer's leg injures do not appear to be severe. Both suspects were later caught and neither is believed to be a Samford employee or student.
