BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Alabama public safety officials say a crackdown on bad behavior by drivers when they encounter big trucks on the state's highways will resume next month.
The Department of Public Safety says the statewide campaign to reduce the number of 18-wheeler crashes has resulted in state troopers writing more than 12,000 tickets so far, with 92 percent of those going to drivers of 4-wheel vehicles.
The campaign covers seven weeks, including three weeks in September and October. The remaining four weeks will be in November and December. It is funded through a $650,000 grant from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, which enforces commercial truck and bus regulations.
State troopers are focusing on the leading causes of highway crashes: speeding, tailgating, improper lane change and failure to signal lane changes.
