Decatur police solve 15-year-old rape case

Associated Press - October 29, 2009 8:44 PM ET

DECATUR, Ala. (AP) - Decatur police have solved a 1994 case involving the rape of a 16-year-old girl.

An intruder climbed through the window of the girl's Decatur apartment home, where she lived with her mother.

A sexual assault exam was performed at the hospital but DNA testing was not yet available.

Detectives reviewed several cold cases in 2008 including the 1994 rape.

The victim, now 31, wanted closure in the case and police sent her sexual assault kit to the Department of Forensics. The DNA matched Kenneth Jackson, a convicted criminal.

The Decatur Daily reports Thursday that Jackson is currently serving a life sentence in Alabama for three rape convictions in the early 1990s.

He cooperated with police in the investigation and was indicted on a fourth rape charge earlier this month.
