WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Artur Davis (D) says he will vote 'no' when the Affordable Health Care for America Act comes up for a vote. Davis issued a statement Monday explaining his reasons for not supporting the measure.
"I am a supporter of health care reform who believes that the House leadership's approach is not the best we can do," Davis said. "Because we risk a disaster if we get this wrong, I will vote no on the House legislation and continue to root for a final bill that fixes the holes in our health care system and contains soaring costs in both the private and public sectors."
Davis, while admitting the Senate Finance Committee's bill needs work, says it comes closer to achieving "the real reform we need." Davis cites three reasons for that belief:
The congressman said those three factors "should make even my more liberal constituents cautious about the virtues of the House bill."
Davis, who is seeking the Democratic nomination to become Alabama's next governor, concluded saying he believed the public option will actually cost more than most private insurance plans and cites Congressional Budget Office estimates that fewer than 2% of Americans would end up in the public option.
