Friday is the deadline Governor Bob Riley has to meet to provide a federal court with his plan for combating overcrowding in Tutwiler Prison for Women. US District Judge Myron Thompson called Tutwiler prison "a ticking time bomb."
Part of the governor's plan is that he wants to hire about 29 more parole officers. The governor is also considering sending some inmates to Louisiana or other states. Governor Bob Riley will be spending the next few days in our nation's capitol.
Riley's predecessor, Don Siegelman, also looked at housing Alabama inmates at privately operated prisons in Louisiana, but he eventually rejected the plan because of the cost.
