Tuskegee.: 2nd rape suspect not employee

TUSKEGEE, AL (WSFA) - Tuskegee University is speaking out after reports that a second suspect in the mid-October rape case of a 15-year-old girl was also a university police officer.

William Curtis, Jr. was indicted along with now former officer John Moon in a specially called session of the Macon County Grand Jury Tuesday.

The information, which came from District Attory E. Paul Jones' office, indicated Curtis was a current university employee.

The University says Curtis is not a current employee, rather "His tour of duty as a security officer ended in 1995." The exact reason for the end of Curtis' employment was not provided.

Curtis faces one count of Conspiracy to Commit Rape and one count of Conspiracy to Commit Sodomy. His bail was set at $250,000.

Moon was on suspension ordered by University President Dr. Benjamin F. Payton. He is now fired from his job "in light of official charges against him."

The rape is alleged to have happened off campus while Moon was off-duty. Investigators said at the time of Moon's arrest they had reason to believe there were more victims, but did not give specific reasons for that belief.
