BAY MINETTE, Ala. (AP) - Police say a man jailed in Bay Minette is linked to a Jamaican lottery scam that swindled two Foley residents out of more than $1 million.

The Mobile Press-Register reports that Foley police Cpl. Tony Nelson says 71-year-old Stanley Samuel Walker of Kingston, Jamaica, is being held in the Baldwin County Corrections Center, charged with theft of property and with bail set at $350,000.

One Foley victim told the newspaper that a man contacted his wife several months ago and said she had won $48 million in a sweepstakes. He said his wife sent the scammers about $200,000 and ran up credit card bills of $500,000 to deliver them more.

In May, U.S. and Jamaican authorities announced the formation of a task force to combat such scams.
