Veteran's Day events 2009 (Statewide)

MONTGOMERY, AL - Small Towns and Downtowns across Alabama are set to celebrate Veteran's Day with free events, parades and tributes.

Families can watch the National Veterans Day parade in downtown Birmingham - the largest and oldest celebration of its kind. Parade watchers in Anniston can see and touch military vehicles and equipment on display at the city's Annual Veterans Day Parade. Visitors can climb aboard a WWII Battleship, the USS Alabama in Mobile and enjoy a free Pops concert at Battleship Memorial Park.

The tourism department compiled the following list of free parades, ceremonies and tributes that honor all military veterans.

(ATHENS)
Athens Veterans Day Parade and Celebration - November 7, 11
Downtown and VFW Lodge

The parade begins at Athens High School and will wind through the downtown streets on November 7 at 11 a.m. Contact: 256.374.2072, 256.374.2073. The VFW Lodge on Elm Street in Athens will hold a Veterans Day Celebration on November 11 at 11 a.m. followed by a meal. Contact: 256.233.1067.

(ANDALUSIA)
Covington County Veterans Day Parade

The 6th Annual Covington County Veterans Day Parade and Ceremony will be held in the City of Andalusia on Wednesday, November the 11th. It will start at 9:00 a.m. with a parade that will feature 6 floats for Veterans : WWII, Korean War, Vietnam, Dessert Shield/Desert Storm, the Cold War Era, Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. All of our local bands will also participate. The parade route is on East Three Notch Street and ends at the Veterans Memorial , located behind city hall, where the ceremony will take place. A reception at city hall will follow the ceremony.

Annual Veterans Day Parade - November 11
Downtown

The tri-county parade honors those serving and those who served in all armed forces. Visitors can see a variety of military vehicles and equipment for the U.S. Department of Defense. 2 p.m.

(ARDMORE) 
Veterans Day Program and Chicken Stew - November 11
Annex Building on Main Street

The Ardmore Veterans Organization will honor veterans with a ceremony on Main Street followed by free chicken stew. 11 a.m. Contact: 256.423.3222, 256.423.7588.

(BIRMINGHAM)
National Veteran's Day Parade

Enjoy the largest and oldest celebration of its kind in the U.S. More than 5,000 participants, 15 bands and 50 floats will join in the Veteran's Day celebration. 1:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m. Contact: 205.325.1432.

Huntsville Veterans Day Parade - November 11

Downtown beginning on Clinton Avenue

Huntsville celebrates Veterans Day with a parade themed "Courage, Sacrifice, and Duty - Heroes Among Us." The parade can be viewed in person or live on TV station WAFF 48 at 11 a.m. A flag at the corner of Williams and Lowe Avenues will be raised to full mast followed by taps and a three-volley rifle salute. Mobile Bay Area Veterans Day Celebration - November 11
Mobile - various sites

A downtown parade kicks off events followed by a Veterans Appreciation luncheon at Fort Whiting Auditorium at noon (admission charged for luncheon). A Freedom Celebrations with a parade of flags by local school children begins at 3 p.m. at the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park. A free Pops Band concert ends the festivities. Montgomery's Veterans Day Observance

Central Alabama Veterans Health Care System (CAVHCS) will hold a week-long celebration of Veterans in early November that will culminate with a Veterans Day observance on the Montgomery Campus at 11 am on November 11. The ceremony will feature the Presentation of the Colors by the Honor Guard from Maxwell-Gunter, Air Force Base, patriotic music from the Capitol Sounds Concert Band, the laying of a Memorial Wreath and comments from Mayor Strange.

Veterans Day Ceremony - November 11

Music, a special guest speaker and a roll call of veterans highlight this event honoring veterans in downtown Union Springs. Contact: 334.738.8687.

(Enterprise)
Veterans Day Ceremony

The Disabled American Veterans Chapter 9 of Enterprise and the City of Enterprise will host a Veteran's Day Memorial Ceremony. The ceremony will be held at the Wall of Freedom in the Enterprise Recreational Complex on Highway 167 North on Wednesday, November 11, 2009 at 6:00 p.m. This year's speaker will be Lieutenant Colonel Michael Burns, Battalion Commander, 1-212th Aviation Regiment. The public is encouraged to attend.
