Houston Sheriff's chaplain charged in teen's rape

Posted: Updated:

DOTHAN, Ala. (AP) - Houston County Sheriff Andy Hughes says the office's chaplain has confessed to sexually assaulting a 15-year-old Dothan girl. Hughes said Friday that detectives arrested 53-year-old Curtis Otha Grant and charged him with one count of second-degree rape, five counts of second-degree sodomy and five counts of enticing a child for immoral purposes.

The arrest was described as unusual because the alleged assailant confessed first and deputies later sought out the victim. Hughes said Grant confessed to him and the victim corroborated everything. The sheriff said he was angered, saddened, and shocked by the news.

The Dothan Eagle reports the sexual assaults happened between Aug. 15 and Sept. 23. Grant was arrested late Thursday night and is being held on $65,000 bond. He faces two to 20 years if convicted of each of the class B felony crimes he faces.
