TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - University of Alabama officials are considering a $15 million renovation plan to commemorate Foster Auditorium's place in civil rights history.
Under a proposal, a memorial plaza would recognize the site where then-Gov. George Wallace made his "Stand in the Schoolhouse Door" opposing the enrollment of 2 black students in 1963.
The memorial plaza would be in front of the building, and university officials will ask trustees in February to name the plaza after the two black students, Vivian Malone Jones and James Hood.
Mike Lanier, a manager for UA construction projects, told trustees Thursday that they will be presented with a "fully vetted design and naming resolution" in February.
