BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Just as Southern prepares to face Alabama State in Mobile, Ala., this weekend, the university has received some welcome news: The Gulf Coast Classic is on the verge of holding up its end of last year's deal.
According to the contract between SU, ASU and game organizers, Southern was supposed to receive a $250,000 payout for last year's game at Ladd-Peebles Stadium.
But as late as last month, the Gulf Coast Scholar & Sports Foundation, which oversees the game, still owed $103,900 of its payout to Southern.
That has changed.
Southern Athletic Director Greg LaFleur tells The Advocate that two weeks ago, the foundation sent a check for $70,000.
LaFleur said within the next week or two, they will be getting a second check for the remaining $33,900.
