Alabama governor's race splits on health care

Posted: Updated:

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - The health care legislation pending in Washington has split the Democratic candidates for governor in Alabama.

Agriculture Commissioner Ron Sparks says U.S. Rep. Artur Davis betrayed his constituents by voting against the bill when it passed the House Saturday night. Sparks says he supports the public option and would have voted for the bill. Davis said Sparks is being "deliberately dishonest" by changing his message on health care, based on what his audience wants to hear. He said Sparks told business leaders in August that he was opposed to the legislation, but now he's supporting it.

Davis and Sparks meet in the Democratic primary for governor on June 1.
