AU band mourns death of student

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - A 19 year old college student killed in a wreck on I-85 Monday was a member of the Auburn University Band.

State troopers say Sarah Darelle Anderson of Robertsdale, Ala. was killed and her passenger, 19-year-old Sara Elizabeth Clayton of Auburn, Ala. was injured after the car they were traveling in hydroplaned on the rain-drenched roads in Montgomery.

Anderson, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle when it overturned. She was pronounced dead on the scene. Clayton, who was wearing a belt, is listed in stable condition.

Initial reports indicated the girls' vehicle was struck by an 18-wheeler. Troopers say while that is partly true, the 18-wheeler event was a second accident and did not cause anything more than property damage. Neither victims' injuries where sustained in that collision. The vehicle had yet to be pulled from the roadway when it was struck.

Anderson was a sophomore at Auburn. She played the flute and was on a music scholarship.

"She was always smiling just a terrific human being its so tragic she was the perfect epitome of the Auburn Student, we were very fortunate, can't imagine what her parents are going through" said Auburn's Band Director Dr. Rick Good.

Dr. Good says faculty and students are in the process of organizing a memorial and tribute to Sarah Anderson.
