Human rights group threatens fines for DOC records

Associated Press - November 13, 2009 6:14 PM ET

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - The Alabama Department of Corrections has yet to comply with a September state Supreme Court order that it turn over internal reports on inmate assaults and documents related to an inmate's death.

The Atlanta-based Southern Center for Human Rights sent the department a letter Friday making a second request for the documents and saying it will file for contempt and fines if the information is not released within seven days.

Corrections spokesman Brian Corbett said the department is very close to compiling the information.

The Alabama Supreme Court ordered on Sept. 18 that corrections officials make public their internal reports on inmate assaults at a state prison. The department was also ordered to release its findings in the death Faron Barksdale, who was convicted of killing two Athens police officers.
