Auburn, AL (WSFA) - Governor Bob Riley is making sure that counties that "Go Green", get recognized for their efforts. Governor Riley has awarded more than a million dollars to eight counties for their recycling efforts.

  • Dothan awarded more than $220-thousand
  • Lee county awarded $120-thousand
  • Eclectic awarded $31- thousand
  • Elba awarded $1-thousand

Governor Bob Riley gives special thanks and praise to Auburn's effort in recycling and protecting its environment. Riley said, "I wish every small community in the state of Alabama could come down and see what you're doing in Auburn because its neat, its clean, there's no smell and its right in the middle of a residential section." Auburn was the first city in the state to begin a recycling center.

Riley signed an act into law last year that taxes landfills one dollar per ton of recycling waste. The tax money has aided Lee county and seven other grant recipients in their recycling efforts.

Although markets for recycle material are poor, Governor Riley said recycling management "allows the people that want to recycle, an opportunity to do so. It allows us to save so many of our natural resources".
