MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Gov. Bob Riley has pardoned a Thanksgiving turkey as part of an annual Alabama tradition that dates back to 1949.
Friday marked the 60th time that an Alabama governor has pardoned a turkey. The blessed birds are always named Clyde and are provided by Bates House of Turkey in Greenville.
First Lady Patsy Riley has used the occasion at the governor's mansion to promote "Blankets with a Blessing." The program collects blankets for the needy as winter nears.
Students from Dalraida Elementary School in Montgomery and Fort Dale Academy in Greenville joined Patsy Riley at the event and brought blankets to donate to the less fortunate.
