Birmingham, Ala (WBRC & WSFA) -- Alabama's largest city has a new mayor as of Tuesday morning. Our newspartner WBRC reports Roderick Royal has been elected City Council President, which also makes him Birmingham's new acting mayor.
Royal will now become the city's 3rd mayor in a month taking over from previous Acting Mayor Carole Smitherman. Smitherman assumed the office after Larry Langford was convicted on federal bribery charges.
Smitherman does, however, keep her city council position.
Because Royal is not running for mayor in the December 8th special election, Birmingham could have 4 mayors in 6 weeks.
Fourteen candidates, including Smitherman, are running in the election. If none of the fourteen win a majority of an expected low vote, there will be a run off on January 19.
