Tuscaloosa asks legislative help with hospital

Associated Press - November 25, 2009 12:34 PM ET

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - The Tuscaloosa City Council has asked the Tuscaloosa County legislative delegation to introduce a bill that would ensure that Bryce Hospital stays in the city.

The city has filed a lawsuit against the state aimed at keeping the hospital in Tuscaloosa. City officials filed the suit after Gov. Bob Riley publicly discussed moving the state psychiatric hospital to the empty Carraway Medical Center building in Birmingham.

The Tuscaloosa News reports that Mayor Walt Maddox said it was the council's hope that the hospital has at least 350 beds and that the physicians, nurses and staff will not be privatized.
