PHENIX CITY, AL (WSFA) - A two vehicle head-on collision has left one seriously injured and a mother and her unborn baby dead. The crash happened Thursday afternoon on Lee Road 240 in Phenix City.
Investigators say 17-year-old George Allen of Phenix City was driving a 2001 Nissan Sentra when he apparently crossed the centerline. The car slammed head-on into a 2001 Chevy Cavalier driven by 18-year-old Chelsey Beckwith. Beckwith was not injured, according to police.
Allen and a passenger in his car, 15-year-old Kimberly Maragh of Salem, suffered serious injuries in the crash and were transported to Columbus Regional Medical Center in Georgia.
Allen's condition is unknown at this time.
Doctors discovered during surgery that Maragh was pregnant, but the child had died of blunt force trauma caused by the accident.
Maragh, herself, was admitted to the ICU but, "her condition rapidly declined..." authorities said. She died of complications of her injuries at 10:00pm Thursday.
An investigation is ongoing by the Alabama State Troopers and the Lee County Coroner's Office. The case will be given to a Grand Jury when the investigation is complete.
