Residents discuss Fairview revitalization

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - As cars cruised West Fairview Avenue, dozens of residents met to plan the future version of the thoroughfare.

At New Life Missionary Baptist Church, developers paved the way, encouraging the public during a brief presentation.

"The physical design and the sense of community actually lead to a terrific place for eating, for living people's lives," said Jason King of Dover Kohl Partners.

Some people have lived most of their lives along the stretch of road. They say it's time for a change.

"It's not nothing like it used to be.  It's gone down a whole lot," said W.L. Adams of Montgomery.

"I hope I see the day when it looked like it used to be."

Gathered at work tables, residents laid out their ideas for a renovated Fairview.  Generations worked together to come up with suggestions for the city.

"We are asking for shrubbery, and a tree-lined median.  We're asking for rotundas," said Karen Jones.

"They can make a place where kids can be--where they can be safe, where nobody will harm them or nothing like that," suggested Zacoya Pride, 11.

From sidewalks to storefronts, a picture of the area emerged.

"It really shows that we are all working together for a better day and a better future for the people of Montgomery, Alabama," said Dr. Paul Pogue.

Residents say the plans are encouraging, but they require a lot of work.

"I think it's a nice project that they're bringing to the table, but for it to happen, we all need to be on one accord," said Kevin Laudat of Montgomery.

Meetings continue at New Life Baptist Church all week, ending with a 'Work in Progress' presentation on Friday at 6:00PM
