Wiregrass Honor Flight preps for last flights

Posted by: Daniel Curtis - bio | email

DOTHAN, AL (WSFA) – Almost 200 Wiregrass veterans have taken a trip of a lifetime.

They visited the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. as a part of the Honor Flight program.

They step off the plane weary and tired but happy after visiting their memorial in the nation's capital. So far, the Wiregrass chapter of Honor Flight has flown almost 200 vets on the trip.

"When we first started we thought maybe one flight would be a great wonderful thing then as the applications started coming in next thing you know we were able to put together two flights and then the donations continued to come in," says Jim McGhee of the Wiregrass Honor Flight.

Organizers are in the final planning stages for their third and fourth trips in April.

They will be the final two flights that chapter will make.

"Were talking a total of 360 World War II veterans out of the Wiregrass area who we have been able to take to Washington, D.C. to see their memorial," says McGhee.

Flights cost around $66,000 and organizers say without the countless donations over the last year none of these flights would have happened.

"We are still needing a few donations to come in to make that last flight possible and I am encouraged by the donations that have come in and I know that the people will want to do their part and be part of something that is just absolutely outstanding," says McGhee.

The next trip is April 17th and the final trip is April 24th.
