Country Crossings says it's going to reopen

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - Hours after Alabama's Attorney General announced he would take over control of Governor Bob Riley's Task Force on Illegal Gambling, an embattled casino is feeling comfortable enough to reopen.

Country Crossing in Dothan voluntarily closed in February to avoid being raided by the Task Force. The heavy duty chains are about to come off the doors.

Facility officials said AG King's statements were the sole reason for their decision. They plan to have the casino ready for business by Wednesday at 8:00am.

"We applaud Attorney General King's decision to seek a civil declaratory judgment to resolve this issue in a court of law," the gaming facility said in a statement. "We will, of course, abide by any decision that the court renders, but as we have stated from the beginning, we are confident that our machines are legal based on the Houston County Amendment and the Alabama Supreme Court's six-point test.

Will Matthews, lawyer for Country Crossing said, "We are putting people back to work and will once again generate tax revenue for Houston County. We will also begin making preparations for concerts at the facility. This is a great day for the people of the Wiregrass, the state of Alabama and the rule of law."

Matthews said he will leave open his invitation to the attorney general and district attorney of Houston County to come to Country Crossing and perform a civil investigation of the machines.
