Bill to block new health care law in Ala. stalls

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - An attempt failed in the Alabama Senate to force lawmakers to debate a bill that would block enforcement of some provisions of a new federal health care overhaul.

An effort to bring up the bill Tuesday received 15 votes. That's six votes shy of the 21 votes needed. The sponsor, Republican Sen. Scott Beason of Gardendale, threatened to use delaying tactics in the Senate until his bill passes. Beason's bill would prevent the federal government from dictating that an Alabama resident or doctor must participate in a certain health care plan. Three similar bills that are stuck in a House committee.

The sponsor of one bill, Republican Rep. Robert Bentley of Tuscaloosa, urged Democratic leaders to allow debate on at least one of the bills.
