MONTGOMERY, AL – Thirty-eight Montgomery-area businesses and organizations have joined with the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce and Montgomery Public Schools to help beautify school campuses before the new school year.
These organizations put together volunteer teams to trim trees and shrubs, edge sidewalks and curbs, weed flower gardens, replace pine straw and more.
Several organizations have adopted more than one school for cleanup, including Maxwell Air Force Base, which adopted 15 schools, Alabama Power (five), Leadership Montgomery (four), Emerge Montgomery (two), Alabama Association of Government Accountants (two) and BB&T (two).
This annual event began July 27 and lasts through Aug. 7, 2010.
"We are proud that the Montgomery business community and several local organizations have chosen to help with this worthy cause," said Nim Frazer, chairman of the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. "The school cleanup is one of the best morale builders for both the students and the teams who have graciously given their time and resources for this annual campaign."
Each year, the Chamber partners with Montgomery Public School for the cleanup. More than 1,000 volunteers typically turn out. All 58 public schools were adopted this year.
Championing public schools is one of the four goals of the Chamber's "Imagine A Greater Montgomery" economic strategy. The goal of this project is to ensure that students come back to school to campuses that are clean, neat and free of debris and clutter.
