Two arrested in Publix robbery case

MONTGOMERY, AL - Montgomery Police officers arrested two men Wednesday evening after responding to a robbery at a Montgomery grocery store.

Police arrived at the Publix at 7700 Vaughn Road on a report of the business being robbed around 9pm Wednesday. Officer report that two subjects had entered the business, one armed with a shotgun and the other armed with a handgun, and demanded money. 

A witness provided a description of a red SUV seen leaving the business.  There were no injuries to any employees or patrons during this robbery. 

Minutes later, patrol units spotted a red Ford Bronco in the area of Taylor Road and Chappell Lane and conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle. The two occupants, Anthony R. Roland, 21 years old, from Colorado Springs, Colorado and Christopher D. Gates, 21 years old, from McDonough, Georgia were taken into custody without incident.  Evidence from the robbery along with a sawed-off shotgun and a handgun were located inside the vehicle, investigators said.

Both Roland and Gates were transported to headquarters and interviewed. They were then charged with the robbery.  Roland was placed into the Montgomery County Detention Facility under $300,000 bond. 

In addition, based on Christopher Gates' statement, he was also charged with the robbery of the Publix at 7700 Vaughn Road that occurred on April 3, 2008 and the robbery of the Publix at 7076 Atlanta Hwy. that occurred on February 9, 2009.  Gates was placed into the Montgomery County Detention Facility under $375,000 bond. 

Photographs of both Gates and Roland are being withheld at this time due to the ongoing investigation.
