EUFAULA, AL (WTVM) -  The Alabama Bureau of Investigation is investigating a homicide in Eufaula.

According to Barbour County Coroner Sid Chapman, a 61-year-old man was shot to death in the 600 block of Parker Drive early Thursday morning.

Despite reports, Detective Ericka Herrington of the Eufaula Police Department tells WTVM this incident was not an officer-involved shooting.

Herrington says Eufaula's S.W.A.T. Team obtained a "no knock" search warrant for the house based on information they had received about drugs. When they entered the home, officers found the man they were looking for dead.

Because of speculation that the man was shot during the raid by officers, Herrington says the Alabama Bureau of Investigation has been called in. She says loud noises neighbors heard when police went into the home were flash bang diversion devices. One was used in the back yard and another inside the man's house.

But neighbors think police could be covering up what really happened.

"I think the police came in and bust in on the man and probably shot him. They had to do something to him. A person's life was taken just like that and then they just want to keep it hush-hush. That's not right," said James Hines.

"He was not dead. I had just gone over there about an hour before this all happened and then he ends up dead? I don't understand it," another neighbor said.

"They say it wasn't a police shooting but who shot him? They're the only ones that went up in there. It's just wrong and they need to answer straight up what they did- whatever the circumstances were- somebody panicked, somebody pulled the trigger too fast whatever it was but own up to it, to the truth," added Jerome Griggs, who lives across the street.

While police are not releasing the victim's name, they do confirm he lived at that house and was the only one home at the time.

It is not known at this time who shot him or when he died. Detectives say they're following up on leads. According to police, drugs were found in the house.

The victim's body has been sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences for an autopsy and officials hope that will shed light on his cause of death and time of death.

The ABI's investigative report, when completed, will be provided to the Eufaula Police Department and the Barbour County District Attorney's Office.
